An automatic gearbox rarely fails without warning. It slips a little, it thumps into gear, it hunts between ratios on the climb up King Fahd Road, and the driver quietly gets used to it. By the time the shifts go properly bad, the fluid has usually been cooking for months. We come to your car anywhere in Riyadh with the tools to read transmission fault codes, check fluid level and condition at the correct temperature, and tell you honestly whether this is a service, a solenoid, or a job for a bench.

Most of what we do on site is diagnosis plus the repairs that can genuinely be done on a driveway: fluid and filter service, solenoid and speed sensor replacement, wiring and connector repair at the gearbox, cooler line and leak work, and the adaptive relearn afterwards so the box stops shifting the way it did when it was faulty. If the internals are worn, we say so rather than sell you a fluid change, and we can put the car on a flatbed to a workshop.

What mobile transmission work covers

A modern automatic is a hydraulic and electronic system as much as a mechanical one. A valve body full of solenoids directs pressurised fluid to clutch packs, and the transmission control unit decides when, using throttle position, road speed and temperature. A CVT works differently again: a steel belt or chain squeezed between two variable pulleys, with line pressure doing the gripping. In both designs the fluid is not simply a lubricant. It is the hydraulic medium, the coolant and the friction surface at the same time. When the fluid degrades, everything else degrades with it.

So the first job on site is measurement, not opinion. We scan the transmission module for stored and pending codes, watch live data on a short drive, and check the fluid itself for colour, smell and metal content. That puts the fault into one of three categories: fluid and maintenance, electronic or hydraulic control, or hard internal wear. The first two are usually fixable where the car stands. The third means the gearbox has to come out on a lift, and we will tell you that plainly instead of taking money for a repair that cannot last.

Signs your transmission needs attention

  • The engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate with them
  • A hard thump or jolt when it changes gear, or when you select D or R
  • A long pause after shifting into drive or reverse before anything happens
  • The gearbox hunts up and down between gears on a light throttle climb
  • A burnt smell, like scorched toast, after sitting in traffic
  • Whining or droning that rises and falls with road speed rather than engine speed
  • A gearbox or check-engine warning light, or the car locking itself into one gear
  • Red or dark brown fluid spots on the driveway under the middle of the car

What the on-site visit covers

  • Full scan of the transmission control unit for stored, pending and history codes
  • Live data recorded on a short test drive: slip ratio, line pressure, fluid temperature, gear commanded versus gear achieved
  • Fluid level checked to the manufacturer procedure at the correct fluid temperature, not cold
  • Fluid condition assessed for colour, burnt smell and clutch material or metal content
  • External leak trace across pan gasket, side cover, cooler lines, output and axle seals
  • Drain and refill, or filter and pan service, with the correct specification fluid where that is the right fix
  • Solenoid, speed sensor, connector and harness repair at the gearbox where access allows
  • Adaptive values reset and a shift relearn drive after any service so the box learns fresh
  • A clear verdict before you pay: fix now, monitor, or workshop, with the evidence behind it

Why Riyadh is hard on automatic gearboxes

Heat kills automatics, and Riyadh supplies it from three directions at once. Ambient air near 48°C means the transmission cooler, which normally sits in front of the radiator or inside it, is trying to dump heat into air that is already hot. Long idles on the Northern Ring Road at five in the afternoon mean no airflow across that cooler while the torque converter keeps churning fluid and making heat. A full car climbing the ramp out of a basement park is the exact load case that spikes fluid temperature fastest.

Transmission fluid oxidises roughly twice as fast for every ten degrees above its design temperature. That is why a gearbox here can be shifting badly at a mileage where the same car in a mild climate is still healthy. Oxidised fluid leaves varnish in the valve body, so solenoids stick and shifts turn harsh or lazy. It also loses the friction properties the clutch packs depend on, so they slip, and slipping makes more heat again. Dust plays its part too: a cooler core packed with fine sand loses a large slice of its capacity, and nobody ever cleans it.

Transparent pricing — agreed before we start

We quote before we touch anything. The technician arrives, runs the scan and the fluid checks, and then gives you one number for the work being proposed, parts and labour together, agreed on the spot. If the diagnosis changes what is actually needed, we stop and re-quote before continuing. Nothing gets opened up and no part gets ordered on the assumption that you will say yes. You always know the figure before the first spanner moves, and you are free to say no.

Then that number does not move. The relearn drive is included, the shift quality is checked with you, and the amount you settle by cash, card or bank transfer is exactly what you approved. If our on-site diagnosis shows the gearbox needs internal work, we explain what that involves in a workshop, what it usually costs you in time, and we arrange flatbed recovery if you want it. We would rather lose the job than sell a fluid service that will not fix your car.

Where we do Transmission Repair in Riyadh

Transmission Repair — by car brand

We carry the tools and data for the marques Riyadh actually drives.

Transmission Repair — questions we get

Yes for diagnosis, fluid and filter service, solenoid and sensor work, wiring repair and leak tracing. Villa driveways, compound parking and basement levels are all normal for us, and basements are easier in summer because everything stays cooler. We bring lighting, jacks, drain equipment and mats, and we clean up. What cannot be done on site is splitting the gearbox open, which needs a lift and a bench.

Around 10 minutes to most Riyadh addresses, and we work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including nights, Fridays, Ramadan and Eid. Send your location on WhatsApp and describe what the car is doing: whether it moves at all, which gears work, any warning light, any noise. That tells us what to load before we leave, so the first visit is usually the only visit.

Not for long. Every slip generates heat and sheds clutch material into the fluid, and that material then blocks the valve body, which makes the slipping worse. A gearbox that could have been saved with a service in the first week often needs a rebuild a couple of months later. If it slips, thumps, or has dropped into limp mode, stop making unnecessary trips and get it checked.

Sometimes, honestly. If the fluid is oxidised and the valve body is only varnished rather than worn, fresh fluid of the correct specification plus an adaptive relearn can transform shift quality. If clutch material is already circulating and the frictions are thin, new fluid will not bring them back and can make a tired box feel worse. The fluid and live data checks tell us which case you are in first.

Yes, for diagnosis, fluid service with the correct CVT fluid, and electrical or sensor faults. CVTs are less forgiving than a conventional automatic because the fluid is what lets the belt grip the pulleys, so the wrong fluid or an overdue change causes judder and slip that becomes permanent. If the belt or pulley faces are already scored, that is a replacement unit rather than a repair, and we will say so.

Whatever the manufacturer specifies for your exact model and gearbox. We identify the box from the vehicle data rather than a generic chart. Modern automatics and CVTs are very specific about fluid friction characteristics, and a universal ATF is the fastest way to ruin a healthy gearbox in this climate. We show you the container and the specification before any of it goes into your car.

The transmission control unit constantly adjusts clutch fill times to compensate for wear. After a fluid change or a solenoid replacement, those learned values still match the old faulty behaviour, so the car can shift badly even though the repair was correct. We clear the adaptive values and drive the car through a controlled range of light and moderate shifts so it learns again. It takes a few kilometres.

Yes, in two ways. You get an honest on-site diagnosis with the codes and live data behind it, so you walk into a workshop knowing what you are buying instead of guessing. And we can recover the car by flatbed if driving it would cause more damage. We will also tell you when a good reconditioned or used unit makes more sense than a full rebuild.
