Flatbed Towing and Car Recovery in Riyadh
A flatbed — a satha — carries the whole car with all four wheels off the road. For a lowered car, an all-wheel-drive car or one that will not roll, it is the only safe way to move it.
There are two ways to move a car that cannot drive. A hook truck lifts one end and drags the other along on its wheels: cheap, quick, and wrong for most cars on Riyadh roads today. A flatbed loads the whole vehicle onto a tilting bed. Nothing turns, nothing drags, and the gearbox, transfer case and parking pawl are never asked to do a job they were not built for. For an all-wheel-drive Land Cruiser, a Range Rover, a lowered saloon or any automatic, that difference is the whole point.
We run flatbed recovery across Riyadh around the clock: accident scenes, cars that will not start, vehicles going to a dealer or a specialist workshop, transfers between two addresses, and handovers after a sale. The same truck covers the airport road, Diriyah, the Northern and Eastern Ring Roads and the tighter older streets around Al Malaz. If the car can be repaired where it stands instead, we will say so — a flatbed you did not need is money spent for nothing.
What flatbed recovery involves
Loading is where cars get damaged, so loading is where we slow down. The bed tilts and slides back to flatten the ramp angle. For a low car we add wooden ramp extensions to flatten it further, and a second man walks alongside watching the front splitter and the exhaust. The car is winched up slowly, steering straight, then secured with four straps over the tyres — not chains looped around suspension arms, which is exactly how control arms get bent and air springs get torn.
A car that will not roll needs more than a winch. We put skates or dollies under a locked, bent or missing wheel so it never has to turn. If the steering is jammed after an accident, the winch pulls straight while we correct the line with a side pull rather than forcing the wheel over. At the far end we unload on level ground, hand you the keys, and record existing damage with photographs before and after transport so there is never an argument about who marked what.
When you need a flatbed rather than a repair
- The car will not start and you need it at a workshop today, not diagnosed at the kerb.
- You have had a collision and a front wheel is pointing the wrong way or rubbing the arch.
- The car is lowered or a sports model, and the front bumper touches on standard tow ramps.
- It is a four-wheel-drive vehicle that cannot be towed with two wheels still on the road.
- The gearbox will not select drive, or the car moves but makes a metallic noise that stops when you lift off.
- A brake has seized and the wheel will not turn even with the car in neutral.
- You have bought or sold a car that is not yet registered or insured to be driven on the road.
- The engine is locked solid, or you have been told not to run it again until it is opened up.
What the flatbed job covers
- A call before we set off to confirm the exact pickup point, the drop-off address and whether the car rolls.
- Scene safety at pickup: hazards, warning triangle, and cones where traffic is moving fast.
- Assessment of access on arrival — kerb lips, ramp gradients, gate widths and ceiling heights.
- Careful loading with extended ramps and blocks for low, lowered and sports cars.
- Winch recovery for vehicles that will not start, will not roll, or have left the road surface.
- Skates or dollies fitted under seized, bent or missing wheels so nothing drags.
- Four-point strapping over the tyres, then a second check before the truck moves off.
- Transport anywhere in Riyadh: your home, our technician, your own workshop or your dealer.
- Unloading on level ground at the destination, with photographs of the car before and after transport.
Riyadh conditions and flatbed work
Riyadh geometry decides how a car gets loaded. Villa driveways have a steep lip at the pavement, compound gates are narrower than they look, and basement car parks in Olaya and along King Fahd Road are built for saloons, not recovery trucks — so the car has to reach the ramp on dollies before it can go on the bed. Diriyah and the older districts add tight turns with cars parked both sides. We ask about all of it on the phone, because arriving with the wrong plan costs you an hour of your evening.
Heat changes the work too. In July the asphalt on the airport road softens enough that dolly wheels and jack pads press into it, and a car that has stood in the sun all day has hot tyres and soft rubber that behave differently on the ramps. Summer brings more overheated cars to move, and the ring roads see more collisions in the hour after sunset than at any other time. That is one reason we run through the night: a one-in-the-morning recovery is faster, cooler and easier on the car than the same job at two in the afternoon.
Transparent pricing — agreed before we start
A flatbed quote comes down to three things: where the car is, where it is going, and whether it still rolls. Access counts as much as distance — a car behind a narrow gate or down a basement ramp takes more time and more equipment than one sitting on a hard shoulder. Give us those details on the phone and we quote a firm number before the truck leaves. There is no hourly meter running, and no winching or access surcharge appearing at the drop-off.
The figure you agreed on the phone is the figure at the drop-off address. Cash, card or bank transfer, whichever is easiest at the time. If we arrive and find the car can be fixed on the spot instead — a battery, a fuse, a wheel — we tell you, and you pay for the repair rather than the transport. We would rather keep a customer for years than win one argument about a tow you did not need.

Flatbed Towing — questions we get
Yes. Satha is what everyone in Riyadh calls a flatbed recovery truck. The bed tilts down to the road, the car is winched on, and all four wheels travel off the ground. It costs a little more than a hook truck because the equipment is bigger, but it is the only method that will not stress an automatic gearbox, an all-wheel-drive drivetrain or a low front bumper.
Villa driveways, almost always — we deal with the kerb lip using ramps and blocks. Basements are the real limit, because a flatbed cannot drive down the ramp or clear the ceiling. What we do instead is move the car up to street level on dollies and load it there. Tell us the building and the level when you call so the right equipment is on the truck before we leave.
For most Riyadh addresses we aim for around 10 minutes, and the truck runs 24 hours a day. Ring-road and airport-road calls are usually quick because access is direct. If you are further out towards Diriyah or on the edge of a new district, we give you a realistic time on the phone rather than promising ten minutes and turning up in forty.
That is what the ramp extensions are for. We lay wooden ramps to flatten the approach angle and walk beside the car watching the splitter as it climbs. Lowered saloons, coupes and sports cars load without contact when it is done slowly. If a car is so low that even extended ramps will not clear it, we tell you before loading, not after, and we work out another way.
Yes. A seized brake, a broken hub, a missing wheel or accident damage that locks the steering are all normal for us. Skates or dollies go under the affected corner so nothing drags, and the winch does the rest. Tell us up front that the car does not roll — it changes what we load onto the truck before we leave the yard, and it changes the time we allow.
Yes, anywhere you want. A good share of our flatbed work is moving cars to a dealer for warranty jobs, or to a specialist for gearbox or body work. We are not trying to capture the repair. If you would rather we looked at it first we can, but the destination is your decision and we do not argue about it at the roadside.
Call the emergency services first if anyone is hurt. Otherwise: hazards on, everyone out on the safe side and behind the barrier, and photograph the scene, the plates and the damage before anything is moved, because insurers ask for it. Follow whatever the traffic police tell you about clearing the road. Then call us with the road, the direction and the last exit, and say whether the car rolls.
